Thoughts behind A Life Song
I’ve always been fascinated by the magic and power of music – it’s only sounds put together in a particular way, but it is truly transformative, perhaps more so than any other art form.
As a child I loved to draw while listening to music, and I remember one particular drawing that I did that went over pages and pages of an old exercise book – it was of a river, changing and flowing through different landscapes. I don’t think I ever finished the drawing – it became too unwieldy.
But the idea has always been with me - of each of us having a personal melody; a refrain, a chorus, of our lives as they ebb and flow and build around us. Your song could be seen as representing your unconscious perhaps, your soul or self or spirit, accompanying you as you journey through life. And this is connected to others – those close to you, and to a broader community as well, both now and in the past. You are part of a pattern, a legacy, a puzzle, a constellation. A composition.
Every aspect and experience of our lives is brought into our song, and helps form who we are. All the beauty and joy, the pain and challenges, so I suppose in that sense it’s a philosophical approach – a way to make sense of ourselves and our world, to feel the music, and to go with the flow.
